Once upon a time, social media used to be just for college students. But with businesses, bosses, and family now adopting this form of communication, social media branding is a must! Whether you use it for fun, work, or to keep in touch with old friends and family, it has to be managed well.
Be Authentic- Plain and simple, KEEP IT REAL! We all try to come up with the most engaging, provocative posts; however, if it’s not a true representation of the life you lead—it’s not worth it! The purpose of social media is to connect yourself to your followers. And people want to be able to trust who they’re connecting with. Plus, you were made so amazingly; your true, authentic self is all you need to be!
Keep It Classy- Well, well, well. Being in television, I am always filtering my social media. Do not post anything that you would feel uncomfortable about your job, church, or grandmother seeing. You never want to limit yourself and where you’re going in life. Many colleges and potential employers review their candidates’ social media accounts. Do not shoot yourself in the foot, because you want to be “free” with your keyboard.
Be Original- The best thing you can do in life is be you. Think about what sets you apart from others. Be exciting, flattering, humanizing, and intriguing. Be you. You have to discover how to express yourself as the unique individual you are.
Don’t Hinder Your Brand- We are all brands, whether we try, or not. My career is in television, and social media is a MUST for me. But even if your career does not utilize social networking, you are still a brand. Therefore, never post anything that will hinder your brand, or show you in bad light.
Set Social Media Goals- Always consider your audience and what you’re trying to accomplish with your posts. You may want your social media to help your business grow, or you may just want to have fun with it. Both are fine, but keep in mind where you’re going in life. Do your posts add to that goal, or subtract? You have to know where you're going, and your social media should help prepare you in that direction. Happy Posting!
